Ball Sort Puzzles: How to Never Get Stuck Again
Ball sort (and its twin, water sort) is one of those puzzles that feels relaxing right up until you lock yourself into a corner and have to restart. The good news: most dead ends come from the same two mistakes, and once you fix them you'll clear levels on the first try far more often. Here's the approach we use.
The one rule that prevents 90% of dead ends
Always keep at least one tube you can freely work with. An empty tube — or a tube with a single color and lots of space — is your maneuvering room. The moment every tube is a jumbled stack, you've lost the ability to fix mistakes. Treat your free tube like a workbench: use it, but try to hand it back empty whenever you can.
Pour onto depth, not just color
You can only pour a ball onto an empty space or onto a ball of the same color. Beginners pour reds onto reds anywhere. Better players pour onto the deepest matching stack — the one that already has the most of that color — so they consolidate a color in one place instead of spreading it across three tubes.
An order of operations
When a level looks messy, work it in this order:
- Free moves first. Make every move that pours a color onto its own kind with no downside. These never cost you anything.
- Unlock a tube. Look for a tube that's almost one color and finish it, which frees space.
- Only then take a "committed" move — one that uses up your free tube — and before you do, check you can still reach every trapped color afterward.
Read the whole board before the first move
Count how many of each color you can see. If a color is split under several others, plan which tube will become its "home" before you start pouring. A few seconds of reading saves a dozen undos.
Use undo as a tool, not a confession
Most versions give you unlimited undo. Use it to test a line: if a sequence leads somewhere bad, back it out and try another. That's not cheating — it's how the puzzle is meant to be explored.
Games to practice on
